IN HIS 1963 SPEECH, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SAID,
“100 YEARS LATER AFTER THE EMANCIPATION OF AFRICAN SLAVES, THE NEGRO LIVES ON A LONELY ISLAND OF POVERTY IN THE MIDST OF A VAST OCEAN OF MATERIAL PROSPERITY... SO WE’VE COME HERE TODAY TO DRAMATISE A SHAMEFUL CONDITION.”
50 YEARS LATER IN JANUARY 2013, PETER STERN WAS LIVING IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES WHERE HE PHOTOGRAPHED HIS NEIGHBOURHOOD. IN THE SHADOWS OF THE CITY SKYLINE LIVE THOUSANDS OF HOMELESS MEN AND WOMEN WHO ARE PREDOMINATELY AFRICAN AMERICAN.
